6. Active transport can only occur in living cells.

The process requires energy to move "bad" materials out of the cell in spite of the concentration difference. Note the high centration of "bad" salt (Na⁺) ions outside the cell and low inside; high concentration of "good" salt (K⁺) and low outside.
