Chapter 7 - Glycolysis and Fermentation

1. Glycolysis begins with Glucose and ends in __________ (acetyl/pyruvic/carbon dioxide).

2. Fermentation is a pathway initiated by __________ (anaerobic/aerobic) organisms.

3. One variable is temperature. Three different temperatures were used: 4 degrees, 20 degrees and 37 degrees Celsius. Since this is a chance contact between the enzymes of the yeast and the sugar, what effect would temperature have on these contacts?

A second variable is the kind of carbohydrate (sugar) given to the yeast. Yeast have specific enzymes for specific carbohydrates. Which of the sugars used in the experiment were metabolized?

4. Monosaccharide - Glucose 5. Disaccharide - Sucrose (glucose plus fructose)

6. Polysaccharide - Amylose (Multiple molecules of glucose) (Hydrogens are hidden to simplify illustration.)

7. What happened with Tubes #7 (glucose with yeast) and #8 (yeast without glucose)?
