Chemistry 100 - Element Nomenclature Drill & Practice

Dr. Gergens - San Diego Mesa College

Please complete these incredible elemental steps following the directions and guidelines given:

1) Learn the names & symbols for elements numbered 1-36, 47, 48, 50, 53, 56, 79, 80, 82, and 92

  • Elements 1-36, 47, 48, 50, 53, 56, 79, 80, 82, and 92 are listed at the bottom of this page.
  • Learn the correct pronunciations and spelling for these elements (click here)
  • Do this as soon as possible because you'll be soon tested on this.
  • Here is a Quizlet link to the first 36 elements might be helpful in your learning (click here).

2) Memorize the general location for the first twenty elements on the periodic table.

  • Use this periodic table to learn general locations for the elements.
  • Roll your mouse over the periodic table or double click on it to open it in a new window.

3) Identify elemental color coding for physical state (gas, liquid, solid) at 25°C (room temperature)

  • Color coding of in the periodic table above may help use learn our elemental physical states at 25°C
reds are gases blues are liquids blacks are solids

Elements shown in "white" are synthetically made and have variable physical states at room temperature.

4) At the bottom of this page, complete the drill and practice using the drop down boxes below.

  • Scroll to the bottom of this page to the drop down boxes.
  • Mentally say the element name that appears.
  • Click on the drop down box and select the correct answer.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary. Please practice, practice, practice.

Quickly focus on steps 1-4 above, then continue to practice and have fun.

For FUN-de-mentals

5) Watch and listen to Tom Lehrer's "The Elements."

For the overachievers wanting to learn more about the elements, complete items 6, 7 & 8.

6) Learn the general "physical type" for the elements.

  • Examples of physical type are whether an element is a "metal, transition metal, inner transition metal, semimetal or nonmetal."
  • Use the front cover your textbook to assist you.

7) To view each element at the following web site, click on the element in the periodic table to give you feedback about each element. (click here)

8) Learn more about the coming of atoms into ionic, covalent, acid and organic substances and how to name them (click here)
