Exp 5 - Atomic Emission & Flame Tests

This is a FUN laboratory experiment doing qualitative flame tests for identification of metal ions in ionic salts. We want to work safely and quickly in this experiment following the directions and guidelines give these tutorials.

Here is a quick summary of the high lights of today's lab (Flame Tests),

  • Use a test tube rack to hold your test tubes, see image below.
  • Quickly label 9 test tubes and
  • Add 1 mL (fingered amount) of standard solutions listed on page 115 to the test tube.
  • Clean the nichrome wire as described in the Blackboard Assessment between burnings.
  • Burn each standard and control solution in the top part of the cone of the flame.
