Minutes of  November 3, 1998

     
I. Call to order at 11:30a.m. by Helene Scalliet

II. Minutes of 10/29/98 were approved with corrections (MSU)

III. Reports:

A. ICC- Helene did not go. Dr.Gergens went. Reports: There will be a food drive by Phi Theta Kappa with food bins in admissions, the cafeteria, and counseling office. Asian Club needs volunteers to deliver food to homeless. Culinary club will be taking pie orders for Thanksgiving.  There will be a meeting at the District Office to discuss how to distribute the $25,000 given to Mesa for clubs. There will be a meeting on Friday, November 6, 1998 at 10:00a.m. and on Friday,November 13,1998 at 1:00p.m.  

B. Recycling Committee- (Helene)- Needs volunteers to stand by trash cans and "lead people" to recycle.  There will be recycling bins in the quad for America Recycle Day, on November 18, 1998. Also, the recycling committee has split. The regular recycling committee will still meet and work on projects for the near future.  Phi Theta Kappa is starting their own recycling committee, with a  more long-term planning project.  

C. Soda and Dynabar sale (10/26/98)- made a few dollars, but exact
amount not available. 

D. Treasurer's report (Adam)- not available- tabled for next meeting.

E. ChemExpo- Report was that it went well, and pictures from the event were passed around.

IV. Old Business:

A. Tutoring- there was no publicity for the tutoring session, so it was cancelled for Monday, November 2,1998.  Future tutoring session(s) postponed for later discussion/planning.

B. Field Trips: Pepsicola company field trip planned for Friday, November 6,1998.  Meet at 2:00p.m. in front of I400 building.  About 10 people can go.  George, Dr. Gergens, Maria, Carlos, and Artemes said they will be going.  Officers are to call their group of people on the phone list. 

C. National Chemistry Week:  There will be a table on campus on Wednesday and Thursday.  Volunteers needed- sign-up sheet passed around.  Three tables will be set up on the grass in front of the cafeteria from 10-2p.m. on November 4, 1998, and from 10-12p.m. on November 5, 1998.

D. Officer's incentive: ACS membership paid by the club- tabled.

E. Officers' lunch once a month paid by the club- voted "yes" for having a meeting, but "no" for club paying for the lunch. 

F. Permanent banner (George)- will get more information and make a presentation for next meeting.

G. Household safety tips on web page (Denise)- tabled.

V. New Business:

A. Change meeting times to Thursday- no change at this time.

B. CRC Handbook- Helene presented the idea for the club selling CRC handbooks.  (Buy 5, get one free), which can be kept for club use, or to sell for profit. They are $59.95 each.  We can ask other students, or ask the department if they want to order through us. 

C. Water purity.  Club research? (Angelica)- tabled

D. ACS Conference in Anaheim in March- decided not to submit a paper.

VI. Open Forum (as time allows)- no discussion.
