Dear students, Welcome to biology!

THE SERIOUS STUFF

There WILL BE LABS THIS WEEK and they will count towards your grade. You are required to wear closed toed SHOES to participate in lab. We will take a short campus walk on the first day, so wear comfortable shoes.

Almost all biology classes are full and there are many people on the waitlists. Faculty have been advised to be extra diligent about dropping students who do not show up for the first day of class and giving their places to students from the wait list. Dropped students will not be reinstated.

If you need to park on campus, plan to arrive on campus by

8:00 am (BOTANY STUDENTS)

9:00 am (NATURAL HISTORY STUDENTS)

the first week to make sure you are not dropped from the roster. NOT KIDDING – PARKING IS REALLY THAT BAD, especially on Tuesdays and Thursdays!

For information about parking, including off-campus parking:

If you have an emergency that prevents you from being in class, contact me on or before THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS by e-mail and indicate your full name, which course your are in, the CRN, your reason for being absent or leave a voice-mail message at (619) 388-2425 with this information.

THE FUN STUFF

You will learn a lot this semester. I think you will find this course more interesting than you might have expected and discover that biology has a lot of relevance to your life, no matter what your major. You will also find yourself challenged to do real college level work and to expand those academic skills you already have and acquire new ones.

You will also learn some pretty neat stuff, see some fascinating videos, go on some cool field trips.

You might find out:

How to identify local species and communities.

Why freshwater plants cannot survive in the ocean.

How ÒseedlessÓ fruits grow if they donÕt have seeds.

What kind of sharks you can easily find in San Diego.

The facts about climate change science.

I look forward to meeting with you.
