34. What is the "edge effect?"
The edge effect is the effect within an ecotone where there is a greater variety and numbers than either adjoining community. More species of both plants and animals are found in junctions (ecotones) between two different communities than in either individual community. The second example shows a forest edge with grassland forming an ecotone.
