36. How does a Phospholipid differ from a normal lipid?

Instead of a third fatty acid chain, there is a charged phosphate group. Note the drawing below, the head represents the charged phosphate group and the two tails represent the fatty acid chains. The charged end has an attraction to water and hence it is the "water loving" (hydrophilic) end, the tails point away from water and hence it is the "water hating" (hydrophobic) end.

It is in the basic makeup of a cell membrane.
