29. What is a sere?

A kind of succession.

Such as terrestrial succession, starting with grasses, shrubs, deciduous trees and finally coniferous trees.

Another kind of succession would involve a deep sided lake which would gradually fill in becoming a shallow lake and becoming a pond, then a swamp and perhaps becoming a grassland. These are all different seres.
