35. What is the species - numbers relationship?

Species - Numbers

As you go from the equator towards the poles, you see an decrease in the number of species, but an increase in the number of individuals. This deals with the environmental conditions that change as you go either north or south of the equator. Along the equator you have mild temperatures and abundance of water, great conditions for supporting a variety of life. No one species dominates the environment. As you travel away from the equator the climatic factors get harsher and fewer species are found, some are very abundant, some are common, and some are rare.

Note that in the ocean, the conditions are different, the richest areas are toward the polar regions and diving birds are dependent on fishes, which in turn are dependent on cold upwelling ocean water.
