40. What is an ecological indicator?

Ecological Indicators

An ecological indicator is an organism which is "steno" in its requirements and only occurs under certain conditions. Once the indicator is seen, you know what those conditions are. For example, say we know that cottonwoods only grow where the surface moisture is high. We find a cottonwood and we can then surmise that the water content is high in that area.
